Democracy,
You held me closer than
The night held the morning
You loaded the chambers of
My heart with hope
And as the sun broke free from
The wishful thinking of yesterday
You gave me the will to
Fire a shot at
The horizon of
Who we were and
Who we shall become
Because today is a day of action
There is only one choice
DO SOMETHING.
Yes, do something.
History dictates that
We do something.
We will not be the ancestors
who did nothing
who let those doing the wrong thing
take everything from
All of us doing the right thing.
We will not be the blank pages in
Journals tucked away in
The junk drawers of
History because
It was easier to
Forget the meaning of
Our own existence than
To do something
Do anything.
No.
We will be
The pouring out of
Hope bled into
The fibers of
Time of
Presence of
The echoing of
Relational being.
We will use our
Voices our
Words and
Fight for
The promise to
The next generation as
Proof that
We understood
The universal weight of
This moment
The gravity of
Today because
There is only one choice
DO SOMETHING.
The right choice is
Something.
The wrong choice is to
Do nothing to
Let our democracy
Crumble within
The trembling hands of
Uncertainty to
Faulter at
The first sign of
Discomfort to
Let a more perfect union
Disintegrate into
Disillusionment to
Let cynicism be
Justification for
Doing nothing
Thinking
There will be
A tomorrow to
Puzzle back together.
No. No.
Today is the only day
We have to
Gather our courage and
Fight with
All our heart
Because
There is only one choice
DO SOMETHING.
The right choice is
To fight for democracy.
As we hold democracy
It holds us but
Before democracy
There was
Humanity.
Before humanity
There was peace
And in peace
There was justice
Justice wasn’t written into law
It was etched into
The sides of mountains
Worn down into
Canyons by
Peace flowing as
A river of
Life that
The first of
Humanity
Drank from to
Nourish
Our being
We evolved to
Be at peace.
We do not vote for justice.
Justice is in our blood
Pumped by
The chambers of
This heart
Loaded with
The hope that
Democracy will
Survive that
Unyielding attack that
Humanity will remember
Our history
Because
There is only one choice
